Ban Luang Kao, the "village of the old capital", is located along
the Mekong River. It was next to the Catholic Church here that
the famous Devanika stele was found. This stele tells of the
founding of a city (now identified as Shrestrapura) in the 5th
century AD. Ban Luang Kao, therefore, is at the approximate
centre of the ancient city. The church is one of the oldest
churches in Laos, built there at the end of the 19th century.
 | | Rice paddies and traditional wood houses occupy much
of the area of the Ancient City. |
