The name of Thao Tao temple means "Lord Tortoise Temple".
Thao Tao temple was rediscovered by archaeologists only in
1987. It was never completed, but its existing structure is similar
to the structures built along roads criss-crossing the Khmer
Empire. Archaeologists think these small buildings were used as
rest houses for travellers, though they are commonly called
"chapels" or "hospitals". Thao Tao was therefore probably built
during the early 12th century. The unfinished sanctuary of
Thao Tao is surrounded by a laterite wall. There are two other
buildings: an entrance pavilion (gopura) east of the wall and a
small library within the compound. This temple is smaller than
Nang Sida temple and of lesser quality. Many stones used in its
construction came from older buildings.

one of many structures needing a comprehensive
conservation study and analysis. |
