Champasak, the small town adjacent to the temple and ancient city of Shrestrapura, is modest and quiet. A couple of French colonial mansions along the Mekong, and Chinese-style shop houses mixed with traditional houses on stilts, a few simple restaurants, placid water buffaloes and people quietly going to their domestic occupations characterize the calm and traditional life of the town. People who enjoy history and nature will enjoy visiting Vat Phou and the Champasak area, for it provides a glimpse into how life in Southeast Asia was many years ago.
