The Champasak Heritage and Cultural Landscape Protection Zone is the area of the Champasak Plain encompassing the significant features of the cultural landscape. It consists of a series of hierarchical concentric zones which provide increasing levels of protection to the area within them. There are four protection zones;
- Zone 1 is the Champasak Heritage and Cultural Landscape Protection Zone, covering 390 sq. km.
- Zone 2 is the Environment Conservation Zone. It is 92 sq. km and is centred on Phou Kao Mountain.
- Zone 3 is the Archaeological Research Zone and contains 21 sq km.
- Zone 4 is the Monument Management Zone. It covers an area of 2.85 sq. km., but has the strictest regulations as it covers the standing architectural remains of the Vat Phou Temple Complex, Tomo Temple, Nang Sida, etc.
The areas known to contain archaeological remains are included in Zone 3.
