The Government of the Lao PDR has taken a number of steps to protect the heritage of the Champasak Plain, including the passage of national and provincial decrees to mandate the protection of the heritage and preparation and adoption of a management plan for the site. Recognizing that agricultural and cultural tourism development in the region is inevitable, the Champasak Heritage Management Plan's strategy is to encourage sustainable development while protecting the cultural resources and the traditional ways of life of the area. Consequently, the Management Plan sets forth specific actions and policies to guide preservation and development within the 390 sq km Champasak Heritage and Cultural Landscape Protection Zone it created.
